STW

Writing in Science

STW, which stands for Science Technical Writing, is taught by Ms. Curran. STW is very closely linked to our STEM I projects. In STW, we focus on improving our grammar, clarity, organization, and idea development in scientific writing. We also learn how to read scientific papers, create figures and tables, and give presentations. Towards the end of the year, we learned to write recommendation letters, cover letters, and résumés.

Solar panels on roof

Early on in the year, we read several articles about potential STEM I topics. I read an article about how homes can generate power for the grid by placing solar panels on top of them. I then wrote a summary about it.

First commercial CO2 capture plant

In another paper, we read a scientific paper about our STEM I projects, and we wrote about a few of the topics mentioned in the paper. I wrote about two different methods to capture carbon dioxide. One of the methods was through biomass and photosynthesis. The second method was through the Sodium/Calcium cycle. To the right is the first commercial carbon capture plant in the world, created by Climeworks. It is located in Switzerland, and it opened in May 2017.
